1944 Timeline
January 27, 1944 The Soviets end the German siege on Leningrad. The siege lasted 900 days. 641,000 Soviets died during the blockade.
March 6, 1944 US bombers raid Berlin for the first time.
March 24, 1944 Japan abandons efforts on Bougainville and the US gains control of the Solomon Islands.
April 2, 1944 Soviet forces enter Rumania.
June 5, 1944 Allied forces take the Italian capital of Rome.
June 6, 1944 The Allies invade Normandy in "Operation Overlord." American, British, and Canadian troops set out to liberate France and the rest of occupied Europe from Germany.
June 15, 1944 The US's long range B-29 "Superfortress" bombers attack the Japanese mainland for the first time.
June 19, 1944 The US wins the battle of the Philippine Sea, also called "The Great Marianas Turkey Shoot." Japanese forces lose nearly 300 aircraft and two aircraft carriers. The battle effectively destroys the Japanese naval air force.
June 22, 1944 President Roosevelt signs the "GI Bill." The Bill provides veterans with loans for school, home ownership, and small business.
July 18, 1944 Hideki Tojo resigns as Prime Minister of Japan. The Japanese military loses confidence in his ability to win the war.
July 20, 1944 Conspirators in the German military fail in an attempt to assassinate Adolf Hitler.
July 21, 1944 US forces land on Guam in the Marianas Islands and occupy it on August 10.
August 25, 1944 The Allies liberate Paris from Nazi rule.
October 18, 1944 Soviet forces enter Czechoslovakia.
October 20, 1944 US forces land on the island of Leyte in the Philippines. Japanese leaders order their pilots to crash into American ships. These pilots call themselves kamikazes. Japanese resistance on Leyte ends on December 31.
November 6, 1944 Americans elect Franklin Roosevelt to a fourth Presidential term.
December 16, 1944 German troops counterattack American forces in Belgium in the "Battle of the Bulge." Americans stop the German advance on December 24 and end the battle on January 27, 1945.
