Hitler's
army invaded Poland on September 1, 1939. He used an attack known
as "blitzkrieg," meaning lightning war. German soldiers
brutally attacked and killed many of Poland's military and civilian
populations. Britain and France declared war on Germany in response
to the invasion. The
Allies had already stood by while Hitler invaded the Rhineland in
1936, Austria in 1938, and Czechoslovakia in 1939.
