France
surrendered to Germany on June 22, 1940. The Germans occupied Northern
and Western France and claimed Alsace-Lorraine as a territory. The
French Vichy government ran the rest of the country under German
supervision. A French resistance movement sprang up overnight to
sabotage the German war effort.
