Introduction
Outagamie County residents met the nation's call to duty in World War II. Thousands of the County's young men joined the armed services. They fought in jungles in New Guinea, landed on beaches in Normandy and at Iwo Jima, and flew over the Himalayas into China. Their parents, siblings, sweethearts, children, and friends championed them on the home front. Those at home rationed food, bought defense bonds, and made the machinery of war.

Veterans returned home after four years of war. The community welcomed them back with parades and dances. The war became a defining event in many of their lives and helped shape the world their children inherited.
