More About Robert Mancl

Nineteen year old Robert Mancl worked as a radio operator for the 15th Air Force. He flew 29 missions with Squadron A from southern Italy. He participated in combat missions over Central Europe, Po Valley, Northern Appennines, and the Rhineland.

Mancl sat at a small desk facing a radio set above the bomb bay. He kept his crew in communication with other B-24s in his squadron. Mancl also took reconnaissance photos for command headquarters.

The Army discharged Mancl in October 1945. He returned to Appleton and married Donna Douglas on June 21, 1952. The couple raised eight children. Mancl worked for the Post-Crescent until he retired in 1987. He died at the age of 67 on October 28, 1991.
