Call to Duty: Outagamie County in World War II

Iwo Jima

Over 70,000 Marines invaded Iwo Jima on February 19, 1945. 20,000 Japanese soldiers defended the island from underground bunkers. US Marines captured the island after 36 days of fighting. 6,800 Americans died. Almost every Japanese soldier fought to the death or committed suicide. The US military used Iwo Jima as an emergency landing strip for American war planes after its capture.
