told his son John to enter the Navy because he felt
the Navy offered a safer environment than the Army.

moved to Appleton with his family as a seven year old
boy. He attended St. Mary Grade School and Appleton
High School. He married his 3rd-grade sweetheart, Betty
Van Gorp (third row, 5th from right).
