Gladys Conrad gave birth to her first child on November 29, 1946, and named her Jan. She and her husband Leo remarked at how Jan resembled the image of the baby in the sketch below. A friend of Leo's had drawn the baby picture and given it to the couple as a wedding gift. The artist told the couple that their children would resemble the baby in the drawing.

Leo Conrad sent parachute material to his wife Gladys from the Pacific. Gladys used the material to make the gown.
