An Open Letter to Senator McCarthy

Dear Senator:

We refuse to be labeled dupes and stooges of Communists simply because we do not agree with you.

We are writing to tell you who we really are.

As loyal Americans, we are strongly opposed to Communism wherever it is found.  But we are just as firmly opposed to your methods of attacking it.

We assumed that your charges of Communists in our State Department would be followed up by specific statements of fact and proof.  We were sure you would reveal the truth at the right time.

But days passed, then weeks, months and years . . . and still you have not proven the existence of one Communist in our State Department.  Not one government employee has been convicted or dismissed because of your charges.  You have never gone before a Grand Jury with evidence, or taken any other step to bring your charges before a court of law.

Finally the truth came out – that every one of your “cases” had been thoroughly investigated by four committees of the Republican 80th Congress two years before you made your charges!

We oppose you, Senator, because we are ashamed of being represented in the Senate by a man whom the Wisconsin Supreme Court condemned for “abuse of judicial power” because you destroyed court records, and for violating your oath of office by running for senator while still a Circuit Judge.

Because we are ashamed of being represented by a man labeled by Washington newspaper correspondents as America’s “worst senator”.

Because we were disgusted by your vicious attack on that great patriot, General Marshall, and your intimation that General Eisenhower was ‘Marshall’s firm supporter’, in defeating the best aims of the United States in Europe.

And finally, because we want a man in the Senate to whom the nation will look for leadership – instead of a man who, according to the Congressional Quarterly, has the worst absentee record in the Senate, who has done little if anything for Wisconsin, and who never has had his name attached to major legislation.

We oppose you, Senator, because you represent a way of thinking that we feel must be stopped if our American Heritage is to be preserved.  We always will oppose those who spread the doctrine of guilt by association . . . who assume a man is guilty until proven innocent . . . and who undermine the liberty of the individual by indiscriminate name-calling and the shouting of unprovable [sic] charges under the cloak of senatorial immunity.

Let the words of Herbert A. Philbrick, the famous FBI undercover man, who served his country for years as an agent inside the Communist Party, sum up our position.  Said Philbrick:  “McCarthy . . .  plays right into the Communists’ hands.  He has helped them a great deal.”

These charges brought by a non-partisan group are intended only to answer your recent claims, Senator.  It is for these reasons and not because we are dupes and stooges, as you suggest, Senator McCarthy, that we are working for your defeat and are urging our friends and all citizens to vote against you in the primary election on Tuesday, September 9th.

The following individuals have joined in this non-partisan effort to tell the truth about Senator McCarthy:
