Map of Vogt's Path Through Europe, 1944-1945

The Army removed Roland Vogt from the 1st Division and placed him in the 94th Division in September 1944. He fought for 13 months through south central and northern France and south central Germany until he met Russian soldiers at the Elbe River near Czechoslovakia.

Roland Vogt's path through Europe

The Army instructed Vogt to insert a compass up his rectum if captured. The military expected him to escape and use the compass to find his way to safety. Roland Vogt carried this A-hole compass to use in case of capture, 1944
