This
interfaith rally formed part of a series of efforts by the Committee
on Interfaith Unity to encourage cooperation between churches. The
Committee held the ceremony on College Avenue, next to the Elite
theater on November 14, 1944. Several hundred people attended the
rally to show support for the war effort. Americans used rallies
to help bolster morale and curb dissension on the home front.
American
society experienced enormous social change during the war. The government
encouraged citizens to keep up morale in the face of rising divorce
rates, sexual promiscuity, juvenile delinquency, and declining educational
standards. The government asked Americans to set aside racist, class,
religious, and homophobic prejudices and work together to win the
war. |
