| Buna
rests on the coast of New Guinea in the Papua peninsula. The area
of swamp and jungle measures four miles wide and one mile deep.
Company D landed in Dobodura near Buna during the wet season. These
men fought giant rats, leeches, man-eating crocodiles, venomous
snakes, and swarms of flies in a hot and humid climate. Many of
the Company's casualties went to Australia to recover from malaria,
typhus, or dysentery.
